BARNICH d'ARLON

.

English Version

BARNICH from ARLON

.

Version FRANCAISE

.

The Arlon's branch is looked as being the mother of all the Barnich Branches from Belgium, as the village of BARNICH ( where all the bearers of this surname are seemingly coming from (... or we suppose it is!), is Today, together with his sister hamlet AUTELBAS (Nieder-Elter, in Platte Deutsch, the local dialect), a part of the greater Arlon.

The Stockem'branch, for sure, comes also from Arlon. It's now a proven fact.
Those from Tontelange, Attert and Eyschen are also coming from Arlon....
One can find descendants of this main branch everywhere in Belgium, but also in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, in France, and in Tonkin. About this country, I am still exchanging letters with Jean BARNICH from Fontaines sur Saône, in the suburbs of Lyon(France). Paul BARNICH, Jean's grand-father, a contractor from Arsdord/GDL, (GDL stands for "the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg"), left for Hanoï around 1891, and took the French Nationality (by naturalization) there. He had time to have a son with a local girl: he was named Auguste, Jean's father. Auguste died in 1921, "hôpital colonial de Haïphong". He was a boat maker ("ingénieur maritime") by trade. Paul, the grand-father, was murdered by the coolies of his convoy on the Colonial Route leading to Hagiang, in 1910.

Like the other branches of the Barnich family, this Arlon's branch paid her tribute to the immigration to America.
These immigrants went first to Belgium City/Wisconsin, in the vicinity of Port-Washington! One of the descendants was murdered in 1991 in a nursing home, for a pair of socks! Another descendant of this Arlon's Branch , John BARNICH, was once the "Mayor of Moore Road" of this little city! He died in 1991(See obituary) His daughter, Charlotte M. BARNICH (the spouse of Glenn ARENDT, whose family finds her origins in Grendel, nearby Attert, in Belgium), is now living in Neenah/WI.
Coincidence ? I have just been contacted (End of May 97) by one Mr. FONTAINE, a resident of Florida! And the first question he asked me was about these BARNICH, preciselly those arriving in Wisconsin around 1850! He is a descendant of one Fontaine from Tontelange (and before, from La Mouline-Libramont) who also came with the "wave" of 1850: and he found no better girl to marry than Marie BARNICH, who spoke the same dialect as himself

During the Napoleonic era, other Arlon's Barnich left the country to live in Metz. Two of their male children (or grand-children...) fled this city after the Prusso-French war of 1870, after Alsace-Lorraine were ceded to Germany, in order not to be drafted in the German Army... they then joined the French Colonial Army in Nancy!
One lost the trace of one of them (and his subsequent descendancy...) after he left for Nancy. But it's quite possible the Louis John BARNICH (SSN 559-10-2190) who died in Los Angeles Veteran Administration Hopital on Sept 17th 1965, was one of his descendants... Who knows? Who could help in finding the whereabouts of Louis's parents? (According to Louis's death record, they were John BARNICH and Jennie ELLENJATTA, both born in France). We know a Barnich' family from Alsace-Lorraine came from France to Mexico, then in Texas. Harry Pruett remembers attending school around 1965 in El Paso/TX "with a Barnich girl".
The second son, after spending some years with the French Colonial Troops in Indochina, came to settle in Morocco, then in Algeria. His son participated in the Italian Campaign during WW II, and went back in Africa to join the Territorial Police. He died in Commanded Duty. At Algeria's Independance, the children repatriated to France. (One of them is now living in Marseille, and has just been a grand-father in Marignane!)

But those who stayed in Belgium went not idle! They were far from inactive!
One of them, Charles, after a good job done in Arlon, went to the Capital city, Brussel, to manage a restaurant of reputation: the so-called "Rôtisserie Ardennaise", Avenue Louise. After he died, two of his sons who were notaires, sold the business to the step-father of... Romy Schneider!
The trade of notaire seems to look a pleasant business to three of those Barnich: two of them are located in Ath; the other one is a honorary notaire (notaire honoraire) in Eupen.
Catherine, a laywer, is a collaborator and a councellor to a well known Magazine for women .
Finally, not a long time ago, one could hear the name of Yerry (Georges) BARNICH on the RTBF' Luxembourg "antenna"(RTBF is the Belgian National Radio Network).

A curiosity: there are also the Barnich, who, first from Stockem, then from Saint Leger, left Belgium to migrate to the North of Lorraine when this region began her industrial growth.
This family will settle in the region of Longwy (Cosnes et Romain and Gorcy-Cussigny), to emerge, just after WW I, again in Belgium and Brussel. As the Barnich surname was then spelled with a final E (BarnichE), the Today's descendants are pretending, high and clear, that they have no ties with the other Barnich!
But, as the linking of all the birth and death records do prove it, they are no doubt from the Arlon's Branch!

Also leaving Belgium from Saint Leger, another BARNICH went, with his descendancy, to Senningen (Niederanven), not far from Luxembourg. There, they became engravers. The girls were married "in the paternal business": the youngest , Marie, spouse of Louis SAIMPAIN, a printer, lived in Beauraing/Belgium; the eldest went to America, in the San Francisco/CA area.
Now, with Mrs. REMY from Dinant (a Saimpain'descendant), we are looking forward (but to no avail, so far!) to get in touch with her descendants. A letters'exchange proceeded quite regularly since many years; but, abruptly, everything stopped around 1960. Another coincidence? They had a major earthquake that year in California...

Another branch of the BARNICH went to the BANAT around 1770. When researching the US'Barnich, I got in touch in IOWA with a family (with our surname!) saying that they came "from Hungary". Who knows the way they took to get there?

The coat-of-arms with the two silver crescents on a red field was Jean Evrard Barnich'shield, a paper miller. This logo was incorporated as a filigrane in the paper sheets made in the Freylange/Stockem' mill. Evrard's sons settled in Saint Leger...
